Mitigation Bank Announces Credit Release in Northern Virginia

Significant Stream and Wetland Credits Now Available 

April 4, 2024 – The Plains, Va. Whitewood Farm Mitigation Bank has received its first release of mitigation credits (9290 stream and 4.60 non-tidal wetland) today following approvals by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District’s Interagency Review Team (IRT). These credits are immediately available to provide offset for the unavoidable loss of jurisdictional Waters of the United States, including riparian buffers under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act.

Located on more than 390 acres in Fauquier County, the Whitewood Farm Mitigation Bank provides service for projects within a  broad Geographic Service Area (GSA). The GSA for the bank includes Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Fairfax, and other Counties. InterActive Mapping Here.

This significant credit release is a result of the project’s scale and scope, intended to help enable efficient federal and state permitting for work in the region. With credits now on the shelf, the Bank will generate many additional stream and wetland credits as its restoration works continue.

Once restored, the project sites will be protected in perpetuity to forever contribute to the ecological integrity of this beautiful and historic region of northern Virginia.
